The Tragedy of Eastern European Railway Stations

Trevor Landers

Even as your breath
     races for my cheek
eyeswimming, inelegantly on the platform
     by tracks we are divided
already the scarlet treachery of a pohutukawa summer
     has entered the compartment
there are Romanian stars in your hair
memory cools your wrists and lips
          for a short while, departing
there is less than a border between us.
