Museum Piece

Janis Freegard

Venus' flower basket lounges palely
on her black flannel bed in the Kawhia Museum
delicate as the net curtains in last night's motel.

See how she's twisted and tufted,
right by the shark's teeth Bruce Bedford donated,
close to the porcupine fish swim bladder.

Ed Turner's heart urchin just can't compete;
the musket slug and the stem strung with oysters
are dull in her lattice shadows.

Hardened into patience and with no shrimps to clean her
the star of the cabinet waits behind glass
open for flowers.
